Rafael Benitez has told a ‘very important’ player’ Gabri Veiga to remain at Celta Vigo instead of joining Liverpool this summer.
Veiga’s performance for Celta Vigo last season has led to many top clubs in Europe jostling for his signature.
The Spaniard, 22, scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 40 appearances across all competitions for the La Liga side.
Liverpool is one of the clubs interested in Spain’s U21 international star while the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Newcastle United are all linked to the 21-year-old.
And Benitez, who became Celta Vigo’s manager in June, is hoping to count on Veiga’s services next season.
He told SPORT, “We are talking about an important player, who comes from (the academy). I would be delighted to have him stay with us. (Veiga staying at Celta) would be everyone’s hope.
“And I will try to improve as much as possible if he stays with us. I like him a lot. He’s a great player and I’m counting on him.”
