Former Arsenal star Alan Smith has said that Manchester United need to sign a new striker this summer transfer window in order to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

Smith also described Man United’s signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea as a good recruit.

DAILY POST recalls that Man United finished in third place on the Premier League table last season, behind champions Man City and second-placed Arsenal.

“I think that Manchester United can close the gap on their city rivals, but not to the extent where they are challenging them for the Premier League title,” Smith told Gambling Zone.

“They need a striker, no question about that. If they could get an A-grade striker, that would make a big difference.”

He added: “Mason Mount is a good signing. I don’t think United are going to go far wrong with him. I have really got a lot of time for Mason Mount. How he slots into the team with Bruno Fernandes will be interesting to see. Perhaps in certain games, both of them will play centrally as attacking No. 8s. Like Kai Havertz, Mount is a really versatile player. I think that is a really good signing, but I am sure Manchester United will be thinking they’ve got quite a bit more business to do before the window shuts.”
